AN £11m processing plant is to be built at Barkip near Beith by 2011, it was revealed last week.

North Ayrshire Council granted German company Zebec Biogas Limited and partners The William Tracey Group, planning permission to build an Anaerobic Digestion facility on the former landfill site.

The 75,000 tonne per annum capacity plant is a natural biological process which uses bacterial cultures within enclosed silo tanks to generate methane rich biogas from waste materials such as food. The biogas captured is then used to fuel engines which generate renewable electricity for the national grid.

Con Kerwin, environment director for The William Tracey Group, said: "We are pleased to say that at least 10 new jobs will be created from the plant."
