A REPORT by debt help website Scotland Debt Solutions has this week revealed that Kilbirnie has the highest rate of bankruptcy in Scotland.

On Friday, figures of personal insolvency from throughout the country were revealed and the Garnock Valley town topped the list.

Figures showed that Kilbirnie has a rate of 71 insolvencies per 10,000 people, just ahead of Clydebank and Gorebridge in Midlothian.

The statistics say that Kilbirnie is almost three times the national average but levels across the country on a whole are depleting.

One thing that is said to be having a negative impact on the cases of bankruptcy is the ever- increasing number of people taking to payday loan companies to quash the everyday worries that more and more people are facing in terms of money.

John Baird of the advice website Scotlanddebt.co.uk told a national newspaper last week: “Falling levels of new cases is, on the face of it, a good thing and we welcome this but with some reservations about factors that can mask the underlying trends.” Overall, there were a total of 13,315 new cases of personal insolvency from March 2013, to March 2014, down five per cent on the previous year.
