A LOCHWINNOCH woman is to be the first person in the UK to have a double hand transplant.

Corinne Hutton had both hands and both feet amputated last year after she developed blood poisoning as a complication of pneumonia.

The ground-breaking surgery will be performed at Leeds General Infirmary by Professor Simon Kay who did the UK’s first hand transplant.

Corinne will be the first person in the UK to have a double hand transplant.

The 43-year-old set up the charity Finding Your Feet – originally intended to raise funds for her recovery but which now helps other people who have limbs amputated.

It is expected she will have some sensation in her new hands immediately, but it will take 14-16 months for the transplants to settle down. She will also have to take immuno-suppressants for the rest of her life, which carry some health risks.
