THE Open Day at Garnock Valley Health and Fitness Centre has been hailed as a massive success.

The event, which was held on Saturday and opened by World Cruiserweight boxing champion Stephen Simmons, celebrated the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and promoted sport within the community.

Club chairman, Tam Payne said: “The day went fantastic and we were helped with the sun being out.

"On the day we celebrated the Commonwealth Games by trying out sports such as boxing, cycling, karate, running, football and weightlifting.” Also in attendance was the Kilbirnie Watch of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service as well as fairground rides, bouncy castles and a fete.

Tam added: “We had a big turn out to which we would like to thank everyone who attended a great event.

"I would also like to thank personally all family and friends that helped out on the day and with planning right up to the event, without them these events would not be possible.” All of the sports were well attended and all the children who took part received a certificate.

Tam said: “All the sports events went great but I would say the open air boxing event went down a storm with all that boxed as well as the spectators.”
