POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a teenager was hit by a car, and left in a critical state, on Sunday morning in Beith.

Around 5am on August 24, the 18-year-old woman was walking with her 22-year-old male friend on the A737 near to its junction with Threepwood Road, when she was struck by a Mazda 3 being driven southbound.

She was taken by ambulance to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley then later transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow where she is being treated for head and body injuries.

Hospital staff describe her condition as critical.

Her friend and the male driver of the vehicle were uninjured, but are badly shaken as a result of the crash.
