A DALRY MOTHER has hit out at North Ayrshire Council after one of the bedrooms in her house became uninhabitable due to a delay in repair work being carried out.

Mhairi Rankin, of the town’s Wingate Avenue described the situation as “horrendous” as her two children have to share a bedroom until the work is carried out.

She said: “Over the last month we’ve had three inspectors and three plasterers out.

"We were told that we were a priority job but it was pushed back until December 4.

“The room is just bare bricks and there are structural issues and I have complained about the service I have received, but this is being dealt with by one of the people I complained against.” The council first called on August 20 and Mhairi said that she was told by the plasterers that they were to ‘patch things up’ even though the issues had not been addressed and there was a crack on the outside wall.

Mhairi added: “You can feel the draught coming through the bricks, ceiling and windows.

"If this was a private landlord, they wouldn’t be allowed to do this.” A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “The repair works to the property are more extensive than was originally anticipated.

"However, we have recognised the inconvenience this has caused to the tenant and we have re-prioritised the completion date which will see work commencing at the property before the end of the month.” Mhairi responded to this with some scepticism.

She said: “I’m not hopeful and I am expecting more delays.

"We’ll wait and see what happens.

"All I ask of them is to be honest and make sure they carry out the work when they say it is going to be done.”
