AFTER years of speculation over the future of Dalry Public Hall, North Ayrshire Council has confirmed it is up for sale.

In July last year, the Herald revealed that a question mark hung over the historic building after an independent survey found the cost of repair and refurbishment could be as much as £220,000.

The hall – which closed in 2010 due to issues with the building structure – was built in 1884 on the site of the Union Tavern on Aitken Street as a replacement for the old Town House which once stood on New Street.

The Hall – which many locals refer to as the ‘Town Hall’ – remained in community use until 1985 when it was refurbished as a games hall.

Last year, Independent councillor for Dalry and West Kilbride, Robert Barr, raised the issue at a Council meeting citing a ‘lack of care and neglect’ as reasons for it falling into disrepair.

But this week the Council confirmed it will be disposed of.

A spokesperson said: “The property was formerly a public hall that was used for events, lets and other community purposes.

“However, the property is currently vacant and has some accessibility and condition issues.

“As a result of more suitable space being available within Dalry Primary School and Dalry Community Centre, the building has been declared surplus to Council requirements and is now being marketed for sale.”
