A CREATIVE Dalry Primary School pupil has won a road safety banner design competition.

The eye-catching artwork by Katie Bingham, 9, was selected from hundreds of entries received from local primary schools.

Katie was presented with a blown up version of her design to display at the school during Road Safety Week last week plus a special trophy for her achievement.

The school was also presented with 339 high visibility drawstring bags for each pupil all donated by branded merchandise company Recognition Express who sponsored the competition.

Karen McAllister, deputy head teacher at Dalry Primary School, said: “Road safety is an important issue for our school and we’re grateful to Recognition Express for this competition, which has provided a fun way of engaging the children about the subject.

“They have made a huge effort and we think their designs communicate very well the importance of staying safe near roads.” This is the sixth year running that Stephen Price, director of Recognition Express West Scotland, has joined forces with Brake, the national road safety charity, and invited local pupils aged between four to 11 to design a Road Safety Banner to display at their school.

Stephen Price said: “This competition is one of the highlights of our year and we really look forward to receiving the children’s designs.

“The results are always fantastic and we are sure that Katie’s banner will help to remind passing traffic to slow down.” Every day on UK roads, 10 children under 19 are killed or seriously hurt on foot or bicycle.

Brake’s aim is to prevent road crashes through education and awareness raising programmes with schools, companies and communities across the UK.

Joe Burns, Corporate Fundraiser at Brake said: “Congratulations to Katie and Dalry Primary School.

“Her banner design sends a powerful message to traffic and passers by.

“We urge all drivers to take notice of Katie’s advice and look out for each other.” There are lots of opportunities for companies and individuals to get involved in Road Safety Week.
