LUNAR the huskie who went missing – believed stolen – from her home in Kilbirnie has been reunited with her family.

Animal lovers across Scotland united last week to share Lunar's story across social media in an attempt to recover her following her disappearance on Sunday, September 20.

Extensive police enquiries have now led to Lunar's safe return and they have confirmed that a man has been detained in connection with her disappearance.

Inspector Christine Boyd of Police Scotland's Ayrshire Division said: "Lunar is a much-loved family pet and we are delighted to report her safe return.

"The appeal page set up by Lunar's owner attracted a huge amount of interest in such a short time with over 3,200 people following the updates.

"We received a high number of possible sightings and following extensive enquiries Lunar was yesterday reunited with her owner.

"We can confirm that a 50-year-old Glasgow man has been detained by officers in relation to his alleged involvement in this incident.

"A full report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

"We would like to thank everyone who assisted with the enquiry, by sharing appeal posts on social media and providing information to assist the enquiry."

Police Scotland encourage all dog owners to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to police immediately.
