KILWINNING Sports Club has suffered hundreds of pounds-worth of damage after being battered by double storms.

The club has been forced to cancel all outdoor activities after Storm Gertrude turned its football pitches into swamps and gale force winds tore down its goal posts.

Fierce winds even ripped through the club’s outdoor golfing range tearing down the surrounding nets and fencing whilst rain turned the grass into a quagmire.

The damage led to the club having to cancel football games and golf bookings until the fences and goals could be repaired and the grass has dried out.

Repairs are likely to cost the charity-funded club hundreds of pounds as well as the loss of earnings from having to cancel games, which has left members and youngsters disappointed.

And the flooding and damage doesn’t look likely to let up with Storm Henry wreaking havoc this week, fresh on the back of Gertrude.

Claire Hodge, administration manager, said the club had been “hit hard” by the stormy weather.

She said: “Storm Gertrude really has hit us hard causing serious damage to our golf net and fence which could affect golf lessons over the weekend and coming weeks not to mention the cost of repairs.

“The rain overnight brought by storm Gertrude has also deemed all of our grass parks unplayable resulting in all games being called off which not only means a loss of income but another week with not much football being played and disappointed youngsters.

“We have managed to move some games on to our full size synthetic pitch and we have our newly built swing room for the kids to practice golf in so all is not lost.”
