KILWINNING Academy was evacuated this afternoon shortly before 1pm following reports of a fire breaking out in one of the blocks.

Police and fire services responded to the incident and one person is believed to be injured but not from the fire but during the evacuation process.

Fire engines from both Kilwinning, Ardrossan and Dreghorn stations were on the scene immediately and they discovered fire in the ground floor of the four-storey building on Dalry Road.

They quickly dealt with the flames and got to work dealin with the smoke and any areas affected by fire.

Crews found all staff members and pupils were accounted however a teenage girl was given oxygen for a suspected anxiety attack.

Most of the crews lift the scene but there is still one team on site at the moment.

Students were allowed to return to most of the building with reports that it will be open tomorrow as normal.

It is not yet clear what caused the blaze but a joint investigation between Police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service will be carried out to find out what was to blame.

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council, said: “We can confirm that a fire broke out in one of the ground floor toilets at Kilwinning Academy this lunchtime (Wednesday 10 February).

“The cause of the fire is still unknown. We are working closely with Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue to assist with their operations.

“We have assurances from the Police that pupils will be allowed back into the building this afternoon and the school will open as normal tomorrow morning.”
