AN ENTHUSIASTIC group of service users from Fergushill Day Centre are doing their bit for nature as part of their RSPB Wildlife Action Award.

The young people, who have learning disabilities, have been busy over the past few weeks undertaking a whole host of environmental friendly tasks in their quest to learn about and help local wildlife.

And the culmination of their great efforts is their ‘Bread Bin Hotel’.

Assisted by the Ranger Service at Eglinton Country Park, the group have designed and built their own bug hotel using recyclable and natural materials which has now been placed in a woodland area of the Park – currently awaiting its first inhabitants.

The RSPB award scheme is all about finding out about nature and showing people how they can do practical things to help the wildlife in their area.

The group at Fergushill received their Bronze award in March, and once they have confirmation of their Silver achievement, will get straight to work to reach Gold.

Councillor Anthea Dickson, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “Fergushill Day Centre has a fantastic track-record when it comes to the RSPB Wildlife Action Award and this is another great success story for its members.

“Not only have they helped ensure a better environment for our local wildlife, but they have also picked up practical skills which will see them well in their own lives.

“We would like to congratulate them on their efforts so far, and wish them the very best of luck in their journey to Gold. We look forward to hearing all about how they get on.”
