KILWINNING Councillor Donald Reid has announced plans to implement a safer driving scheme in his ward.

The “20’s plenty” initiative, which legislates that drivers must keep their speed to a maximum of 20 miles per hour, has already been adopted in many school and other residential zones.

Following on from the introduction of the plan to Whitehirst Park and Woodside, Mr Reid now aims to add more streets to the list across the Corsehill area.

The streets would include Parkhead Avenue, Montgomerie Terrace, Moncur Road and Love Street.

Scottish Government legislation has previously restricted the roll out, as several roads were not deemed eligible to meet the requirements.

This included several main through roads as they were not considered to be primarily residential.

However, with gradual changes being made to the legislation, Mr Reid is now pressing ahead with his proposals to increase road safety within the area, having been backed by many of his constituents.

He said: “We’ve been trying to get a public response and to get everyone’s viewpoint.

“In Edinburgh, there are mandatory areas but often, the police aren’t willing to enforce it.

“Corsehill has always been asked about but it has previously not been deemed appropriate.

“However with the changes, we have been able to push ahead and are looking to introduce extra signage in the area.”

Mr Reid believes that, despite the previous difficulties in getting plans green lit, the benefits brought by the scheme will prove to be very worthwhile.

He said: “20 is the advisory speed. Slower traffic reduces the number of accidents as there is less of a risk.

“All of those within the community have been very supportive of taking this idea forward.”
