Plans are underway for a new all-weather football pitch and four-lane running track at Kilwinning Academy.

An application has been submitted for the formation of all weather synthetic grass sports pitch and athletics track, incorporating drainage, perimeter fencing, floodlighting and access paths.

Works are to be constructed on the existing Blaes sports pitch within Kilwinning Academy.

Speaking to Kilwinning Community Council, head teacher Tim Swan said the plans are 'a massive step forward' for the school.

He said: "We’ve been trying to promote sport in Kilwinning since the day I walked through the door and I think you'll know there are plans out there at the planners at the moment for a full-sized all weather pitch out on the the Blaes pitch.

"It’s going to be different, it’s going to be using LED light’s, not the old fashioned lights that shine right across the neighbourhood, it’s what you’ve got on the roads now where it’s beamed down so it’s not interfering.

"But can I say all going well October 9 is the completion date for that.

"So we'll have a full-sized, all-weather football pitch, with hopefully a long jump and a running lane by the side of it secured open to the community.

"It’s not in competition with any of the other facilities that are available to us, but our school didn’t have these facilities where every other school did, we’ve fought really hard and I’m pleased it’s actually going to happen.

"It means in our community we’ll bring up primary pupils to get involved in the school, do different types of activities and it’s going to be open at night and at weekends. You can hold events out on it regardless of the weather basically, it’s a massive step forward."
