DOZENS of volunteers got together this week to clean up Kilwinning.

Promoting Kilwinning had teamed up with Kilwinning Sports Club to spruce up the area surrounding the club.

Hundreds of tonnes of rubbish was collected inside dozens of bin bags following the twoday litter pick in Pennyburn.

Around 40 volunteers, including football teams, staff and coaches, took to the area surrounding the club’s grounds with litter picks and collected dumped bottles, cans, paper and plastic which have been discarded, spoiling the beauty spot.

Sports development officer Colin Hunter said the clean up was a huge success, but there’s still work to be done.

He said “We are absolutely delighted with how well the clean up went.

“We managed to fill two huge skips full of rubbish we collected in umpteen bags and there’s still a lot to do.

“There really was quite a lot of rubbish out there and while you can see the difference the clean has made over the two days, there is still a lot to do in terms of clearing the entire area.

“But on the whole the club is looking really good right now. The grass is looking great and the efforts of all our volunteers has just added to that.

“We can’t thank people enough for taking time out to come and help clean up with us. Hopefully we can now just keep up the good work.”

The clean up was part of Promoting Kilwinning’s Keep Kilwinning Beautiful campaign which has seen them organise similar events across the town for a number of years.
