A KILWINNING man has been fined after he admitted kicking a police sergeant on the head.

James Thompson, 24, of Auchenkist Place, appeared last week at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court and admitted the two charges against him.

The court heard how officers attended Taylor’s hotel in Kilwinning on June 29 and Thompson threw himself to the ground and gripped the door handle, repeatedly shouting “Cuff me”.

The attending officers struggled with him and, as he refused to move, assistance was called for.

Thompson was then cuffed but he continued to struggle by flailing his arms.

He was then put in a police vehicle where he continued to struggle and kicked a sergeant on the head numerous times.

Mr Holliman, defending, said that a mixture of drink and prescription drugs caused this behaviour.

He said that his client had been asked to leave the pub and had challenged this.

He claimed Thompson had seen a ‘red mist’ when the police arrived. It was a first offence for Thompson and Mr Holliman said that he would be watching what he drank from now on.

The Cystic Fibrosis sufferer is subject to daily medication and physiotherapy but he was embarrassed by his conduct, which his lawyer said was ‘completely out of character.’ Sheriff McFarlane said: “I’m taking account what’s been said on your behalf and I sincerely hope that you’ve learnt your lesson.

Thompson was fined £600 after pleading guilty last Thursday.
