It was a car made famous in classic sitcom Only Fools and Horses, but now a clapped out 24-year-old yellow Reliant Robin from Kilwinning has travelled 1200 miles in 72 hours across Scotland for a good cause.

The three wheeler, driven by Alex Thomson and Mark Chesney (known by their nicknames of Sandy and Monty respectively) has raised nearly £6000 for Scottish autism charity, Speur-Ghlan.

The duo set off from Kilwinning on August 2 and clocked up the miles by passing through Stranraer, Gretna, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness, John O Groats, Tongue, Ullapool, Dornie and Oban before finishing back in Kilwinning.

Sandy came up with the idea as his son attends Speur-Ghlan, which delivers early therapeutic intervention for young children diagnosed with autism or developmental delays.

Sandy, 33, said: “My son, Alex, is two years old but about six months ago we realised he was not reaching his milestones.

"After starting the process to go through the NHS, which experience high patient demand, we were still awaiting appointments.

“However, I read about Speur-Ghlan and was immediately interested in seeking their help to help Alex.

“We have only started attending Speur-Ghlan and already we are starting to see amazing progress.

"Alex is now bringing items to us to let us know he wants to play with them.

"His eye contact has increased dramatically and is now initiating games.

"Every session is not only helping Alex but also our family as we are gaining more and more knowledge.   “We were devastated to find out the funding Speur-Ghlan were relying on had not progressed.

"We decided to set off on the challenge.

"It was a real experience having two men eating and sleeping in such cramped conditions, but raised nearly £6,000 is fantastic.” Ruth Glynne-Owen, who founded Speur-Ghlan in 2010, said: “We’re delighted Sandy and Monty have raised such a significant amount.”
