SEVEN enthusiastic members of the Fergushill Day Centre in Kilwinning have been busy participating in a host of wildlife related activities for their Silver RSPB Wildlife Action Award.

The team from Fergushill, assisted by the Ranger Service at Eglinton Country Park, have worked tirelessly to accomplish six water-themed tasks, in order to achieve their Silver Award.

Tasks included an investigation on pond wildlife at Eglinton Park. During the investigation they discovered dragonfly larvae, which became the focus for the creative section of their initiative, by constructing a large scale dragonfly sculpture out of recycled plastic bottles.

The decorative sculpture has been displayed at the Fergushill Day Centre to enhance the garden area for both service users and visitors.

The group also carried out environmentally friendly awareness initiatives by monitoring their water usage and installing a water butt in the garden at Fergushill to collect rain water.

The culmination of their efforts was the creation of their very own wildlife pond which was installed in the Day Centre’s garden on December 3 by Countryside Rangers.

The pond has been raised to ensure that all members of the Day Centre can access the wonders of wildlife that the pond has to offer.

Cabinet Member for Community and Culture, Councillor Alan Hill, said: “This is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when we all work together.

"I have no doubt that the pond will become a focal point at the Day Centre and will serve as a lasting reminder of the hard work and determination of the service users and Countryside Rangers in the quest for their Silver RSPB Award.

“The initiative is hugely beneficial for the group as it gets them out exploring the great outdoors – discovering and learning all about the wonderful wildlife captured within Eglinton Country Park.

“The installation of their very own pond will allow the group to share their knowledge with the other service users and visitors at the Day Centre.

“I hope the group achieve the Silver award in time for Christmas.”
