A KILWINNING woman suffered smoke inhalation after her microwave caught fire.

The woman was at home in her top floor flat in Alexandra Terrace when the fire started in her kitchen on Thursday, February 12.

She sprung into action and managed to extinguish the blaze herself just before firefighters arrived, but suffered smoke inhalation as a result.

The woman was attended by paramedics at the scene but declined to go to hospital to be checked over as the fire crews ensured the rest of her property was safe.

Station Manager Derek Davidson urged homeowners not to tackle fires themselves.

He said: “This is another example of cooking equipment being involved in a domestic dwelling fire.

“In this instance, the fire was already extinguished before fire crews arrived however my advice would be if there is a fire in your home don’t tackle it. Instead get out, stay out and contact the professionals to deal with the incident by dialling 999.” Mr Davidson added “Although the householder was exposed to some smoke she declined hospital treatment despite being advised to undertake precautionary check- up.” He added: “Contact us to arrange a free home fire safety visit and get best advice as well as smoke detectors fitted and the service is completely free of charge.

“It only takes 20 minutes of your time and could save your life.” A home fire safety visit can be arranged by calling FREEPHONE 0800 0731 999 or by texting “FIRE” to 80800 or by logging on to http://www.firescotland.gov.uk
