Thomas Markle said he intended to travel to Britain to take part in Saturday’s ceremony, although later reports suggested he will miss the event as he has to undergo heart surgery on Wednesday.

The Sun said Mr Markle agreed to give his daughter away after she asked him to take part.

However the Daily Mirror reports Mr Markle’s surgery means he will be too ill to be there on the big day.

The Daily Express reports Mr Markle said he wanted to be “a part of history”, while the Metro says Ms Markle has been left “in limbo”.

On to the economy, and the Daily Telegraph leads with comments by a deputy governor of the Bank of England, who suggested the UK is entering a “menopausal” phase marked by sluggish productivity after boom years brought about by the digital revolution.

On the other hand, the Daily Mail says Brexit Britain is still “booming” on its front page, after figures showed employment is at a record high.

The Guardian leads with a report by MPs into the collapse of construction giant Carillion that blamed “recklessness, hubris and greed” by directors and failings by the Government and regulators.

The Financial Times reports on calls by MPs for the so-called Big Four accountancy firms to be investigated by the competition watchdog and possibly broken up after the scathing report on Carillion’s demise.

In other news, a major study has linked mobile phone use with poor sleep, The Times reports, with users advised to switch off devices at 10pm to “stay happy”.
