GREENER GEILSLAND
Great scheme will benefit community
GREENER GEILSLAND
Staff at Geilsland School have launched the Greener Geilsland (GREEG) Project. They are currently in the process of procuring grants which will allow them to re-establish a once-prized walled garden and allotments within the school grounds. Assistant head of education Alex Ferguson said: "We aim to share these allotments with the residents of Beith and district, allowing us all to produce sustainable and nutritious fruit and vegetables.
"It is our intention to sell our produce at a reasonable cost to the elderly and more disadvantaged in the area. Pupils from the school will be empowered to become responsible citizens by providing sustenance to their community - while at the same time benefiting from the enterprise opportunity of learning how to get the very best from a market garden - skills which can be transferred to their home area, providing them with employment and a sense of achievement.
