A SALTCOATS shopowner has introduced a new fingerprint age verification system designed to aid the battle against under-age drinkers and smokers.

Jagtar Singh from Key Stores in Hamilton Street, Saltcoats had the OK ID biometric age verification system fitted into the store earlier in the year after falling victim to selling alcohol to an under-ager who presented staff with fake identification.

Having now also purchased a UV (ultra violet) light to verify genuine identification cards, the store are using the OK ID system in conjunction with the Challenge 21 and Challenge 25 schemes which advise retailers to ask for identification from customers who look under 21 and under 25, even though the minimum age to buy alcohol and cigarettes in the UK is 18. So far, 300 Key Store customers between the ages of 18 and 25 have registered with the new system.

The OK ID scheme means that when a customer shows their identification in-store, a scan of their fingerprint is logged onto the system and their details registered with the store, meaning that on future visits the customer does not need to show their identification again but can simply scan their stored fingerprint.
