NEW ARDEER THISTLE boss Derek Gemmell could hardly have had it tougher with his first two fixtures in charge but is still relishing the challenge of managing the Stevenston club.

After taking over following the resignation of Dougie McGuire the 34-year-old former assistant watched his charges lose 3-0 away to promotion chasers Dalry Thistle and then on Saturday presided over an 8-1 defeat away to Irvine Meadow in the opening round of the Ayrshire Weekly Press Cup.

Now Derek is setting his sights on helping his team move up the Stagecoach Ayrshire District League table - they are currently in a respectable seventh place with six wins and three draws from 18 games - a big improvement on last season when they finished rock bottom with eight points from 22 matches.

On Saturday are away to Irvine Victoria.
