STORMCHASER Graham Smith travelled the breadth of Scotland on Monday and recorded winds of near 70mph at Ardeer in Stevenston.

As severe gales battered through the country, the Herald joined Australian-born IT analyst Graham as he set up his state-of-the-art mobile weather lab at Ardeer Point. The 'weather junkie' had driven from Fife in the hope of catching some of the worst of Monday's freak storms.

And he wasn't disappointed, having recorded a maximum wind speed of 67.2mph at Ardeer, which exceeded his previous top recorded speed by over 20mph.
