JIMMY Miller, the All Scotland Pensioners Party candidate for Saltcoats and Stevenston at the council election in May, says a significant increase in the state pension can be achieved.

Mr Miller said: "We have been demanding a significant increase in state pension since 2003 - we sought £160 at the start which we increased to £180 2008 - and we have always tried to back up our demands with solid facts and figures.

"Britain has 12 million pensioners aged between 65 and over and this will increase to 13m in 2025 and 14m in 2030. To pay a state pension of £180 per week (£9,000 per annum) to 12m pensioners would entail annual expenditure of £108 billion."
