FLUSH from her recent success in winning North Ayrshire's Young Singer of the Year Competition, Saltcoats teenager Amy Hopkins recently starred in the famous musical West Side Story.

The St Matthew's Academy 5th year Higher student played the part of Maria in a production by Centrestage of Kilmarnock to huge public and critical acclaim.

The part required not only expert singing ability but also dance and acting skills of a high order, all of which Amy performed with a maturity and insight beyond her years.

Standing ovations were the order of the day at each performance and, of course, huge congratulations must also go to the whole cast, aged from 15-19, as well as to musical director Fiona McKenzie for her tireless and inspirational work with the youngsters.
