A TRADE union has sought the help of Ayrshire MPs as they battle to ensure school contracted workers are paid the same as employees from North Ayrshire Council.

Central Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe said he was asked to contact the Human Relations Manager of the private facilities management firm Mitie after they had refused to discuss the matter of a Living Wage for contracted workers with GMB union. Mitie currently hold the contract for several schools in the region including St Matthew's Academy in Saltcoats.

Mr Donohoe said: "This matter has been ongoing for some time now where contracted workers working alongside others are being paid less, one example is of North Ayrshire Council recently introducing a £7.20 per hour living wage for NAC workers which obviously contracted workers from Mitie want too.

"The GMB say the management at Mitie will not even discuss the matter with them."
