SENIOR political figures were undertaking furious horse-trading behind the scenes this week as the SNP fought to take control of North Ayrshire Council - and Labour tried to keep their grip on power.
The Nationalists emerged as the largest single group on the council following last Thursday's local government elections, but without an overall majority. It now seems entirely possible that the final decision won't be known until a vote takes place at a meeting of the full council next Wednesday. As we went to press both major Parties - the Nats with 12 elected councillors and Labour with 11 - were each attempting to woo North Ayrshire's six Independents in a power bid.
The Conservatives have been reduced to a single councillor - Tom Marshall in the North Coast and Cumbraes - while the Liberal Democrats were wiped out.
