Last Friday, police officers in North Ayrshire hosted a 24 hour Twitter event to provide members of the public with an insight into their work.

Held to mark their first year as Police Scotland, officers took to social media with information on incidents attended and proactive work conducted during the 24 hour period.

From 7am on Friday until 7am Saturday, officers dealt with 151 incidents in the area including eight missing person reports, four domestic incidents and a variety of others.

A large number of tweets were sent throughout the period and the insight was intended to show just how much work goes into the day to day running of a local police force and the variety of work that they carry out.

Some of information included local events and happenings throughout North Ayrshire including incidents being dealt with by Campus Officers at the local schools, the work carried out with other members of the emergency services, advice on safety and security on various subjects as well as various pictures of daily routines on the beat and in the office.

The North Ayrshire Police Twitter account now has over 2,500 followers many of whom praised the event with comments including: “I feel like I’m on the beat with you, keep up the good work” and “Interesting tweets from [Police] over the past few hours – shows the diversity of the job they’re doing”.

Area Commander for North Ayrshire, Chief Inspector Martyn Hopkins, said: “The positive feedback we received during this event demonstrates how effective social media is as a tool for engaging with local communities.

“We will continue to keep people safe and provide information to the communities of North Ayrshire that outline how Police Scotland are impacting on the concerns that matter the most to them.” To follow the North Ayrshire officers on Twitter go to www.twitter.com/AyrshireNPolice or search @AyrshireNPolice in Twitter.
