DESPITE the weather, the North Ayrshire Battalion of The Boys Brigade Gala Day at Eglinton Park had a great turnout with a steady stream of patrons.

Provost Joan Sturgeon cut the ribbon to open the event, with Kenneth Gibson MSP, North Ayrshire Battalion president Jim Lamont and BB Scotland director Bill Stevenson looking on. Officers and boys of the 1st Largs Pipes and Drums provided musical accompaniment.

The purpose of the gala was to promote the Boys Brigade and hopefully raise a bit of money along the way for those taking part.

Founded in 1883, 2013/14 is the 130th year of the Boys Brigade and the gala was part of marking the occasion.

Provost Sturgeon said: “It is heartening to see a wide range of community organisations supporting the event and of course supporting the North Ayrshire BB Battalion.

"The Boy’s Brigade has an important role to play in our local communities.

“They challenge our young people in a fun and informal environment preparing them for adult life and standing them in good stead for the future.

“I thank everyone from North Ayrshire BB Battalion for organising today’s event but more importantly for the positive impact they have on our communities.” The event was assisted by a donation from the NAC Kilwinning Area Committee and donations received on the day.

After outgoings over £400 was raised.

MSP Gibson added: “As a former member of the Sandyford 47th I was delighted to come along to Eglinton Park and support the North Ayrshire Battalion Gala Day.

“A lot of hard work went into the occasion and praise is due to the Battalion’s leading officers and all who assisted them.

“It is an event that will prove increasingly attractive and grow in scale each year and I’m already looking forward to next year’s gala.”
