Summer Safety is a collaboration between the Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team and Ayrshire Weekly Press – helping to ensure you remember this summer for all the right reasons – not the wrong ones.

There’s nothing better than going for a stroll along the coast on a warm summer’s day but are you properly equipped and are you aware of the dangers?

Remember to wear sturdy shoes or boots and check the tides and weather forecast before heading out.

Do not attempt to climb up or down cliffs unless you are properly equipped and trained to do so.

Climbing up a cliff may look like a short cut back to the top but it’s not worth the risk.

We are trained and equipped for technical rope rescue but we would much rather you avoid getting into difficulty. It wouldn’t be a proper day out without your four-legged friend either.

It’s a good idea to keep your dog on a lead when walking near cliffs or water. Avoid getting too close to cliff edges as they can be crumbly and slippery when wet.

We would always advise against attempting to rescue a dog which is being swept out to sea or in difficulty in rivers and inland waterways.

Mud also poses a serious risk in certain coastal areas around the country and can be just as dangerous as the sea.

Would you know what to do if you get stuck in mud or quick sand?

Try and spread your weight as much as possible and try to avoid moving. Remain as calm as you can.

Discourage others from attempting to rescue you as without specialist training and equipment, they too are likely to get into difficulty.

With all coastal activities, make sure people know where you are going and when you are likely to return.

Always carry a mobile phone with you and if you get into difficulty, or you think you see someone in trouble, call the emergency services.

Our advice this year is simple – Play It Safe.

In a coastal, beach or cliff emergency dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
