FIVE young women from the local Young Voices For Change Group have won an astonishing accolade from the Scottish Women’s Convention.

The girls – Sophie, Zoe, Elaine, Cassandra and Alana, all 16-25 year olds from North Ayrshire who experienced domestic abuse – were nominated indivually for the SWC Young Achievement awards.

The SWC is a Scottish Government funded group that engages with women throughout Scotland in order that their views might influence public policy.

The convention was so impressed by their work that they decided to award them with a group award.

It’s the very first time a group award has been made at the annual ceremony, which will be held this year in Glasgow on August 9.

SWC chair Agnes Tolmie described the members as “a true inspiration to others”.

The Young Voices For Change group, set up with the help and support of North Ayrshire Women’s Aid, recently produced a DVD, which draws on their own experiences of domestic abuse.

Called Daisy’s Story, it tells of a young girl’s experience of several abusive relationships.

Some of the members were under threat of becoming homeless through domestic abuse... but their self-esteem and confidence has been boosted by the support from their peers in the group, helping them on the road to recovery from abuse and control.

Members have been using the DVD as an educational tool to highlight and promote healthy relationships and raise awareness of the signs of unhealthy relationships.

The content of the film was driven by their own experiences and depicts all forms of domestic abuse – driving home the point that domestic abuse is not just physical. And they will use the film to promote healthy relationships to 4th, 5th and 6th year pupils in North Ayrshire and beyond, as well as other outside groups.

Young Voices For Change focus on self expression and influencing change.

In a letter to Women’s Aid, who nominated the girls for the award, SWC chair Agnes said: “Their work and commitment are impressive and must be acknowledged and celebrated.

"The barriers that each has overcome as well as their participation in the Young Voices For Change project emphasises the work that can be achieved by young women working together.

"They are a true inspiration to others.” Fiona Yates from North Ayrshire Women’s Aid said: “We are absolutely delighted that we won this award.”
