When Andy and I have a chance to get away in the campervan, we enjoy watching healthy wildlife in the wild.

It makes a refreshing change from caring for so many injured wild birds and animals.

Last week things didn’t quite go to plan. We stopped off at RSPB Loch of Kinnordy.

We watched a female marsh harrier from the first hide, but while walking to the next hide, came across a little hedgehog on the path.

It was 2pm on a sunny afternoon.

The hedgehog was very wobbly, hardly making any progress at all.

Clearly this hoglet needed help.

So we carried Angus back to the campervan.

We lined a plastic stacking box with newspaper, filled an empty plastic bottle with hot water, and Andy donated his woolly bird watching hat for a nest. Angus was soon sleeping, warm and content.

The next problem was food.

Our dog wasn’t too pleased to see some of her biscuits being put into a coffee jar lid, and having hot water poured on them.

When cool they were offered to Angus.

The hedgehog ate a little and drank a lot.

The dog biscuits were supplemented with fresh meat from roadkill pheasants...there were plenty of them; the young stock had just been released, and as usual it seemed that most were killed on the road.

Angus kept us company for three days till we returned to Hessilhead.

He has swopped the Romany way of life for more conventional accommodation, and eats tinned cat food.
