YES campaign activists are deliberately misleading sympathetic Labour voters with copy cat campaign flyers.

That’s the stark accusation North Ayrshire Labour politicians are levelling at SNP activists this week.

In the fevered atmosphere of the last few days of Referendum campaigning, Labour politicians hit out at Yes Scotland leaflets printed in traditional Labour colours of red and yellow being distributed at stalls manned by SNP councillors.

North Ayrshire Council Labour group leader Peter McNamara said: “It saddens me that NAC councillors have been caught acting in this fashion.

“If the SNP thought it had a good enough case they wouldn’t have to pretend to be something they are not”.

But council leader, the SNP’s Willie Gibson, hit back: “I am saddened but not surprised by the news that a once-proud party who at one time did so much to help and support working class people in this country, should be reduced to this level.

“The relentlessly negative campaign from Labour and their Tory bedfellows has led to traditional Labour supporters in large numbers rejecting policies which support illegal wars and nuclear weapons and threaten the NHS.

“At a time when their supporters are deserting them in large numbers, the best they can do is complain about the colours of campaign literature.

"How ridiculous is this?

“Maybe they are more interested in keeping their jobs rather than fighting for a fairer more just society for all the people of Scotland.” A spokesperson for Yes Scotland said: “Our leaflets, just like the No campaign’s, come in a variety of colours, but the message is clear – Labour’s Westminster leaders don’t speak for trade unionists and Labour voters in Scotland.

“They speak on behalf a No campaign that wants to deny the people of Scotland the opportunity of a lifetime to build a fairer society.

“That’s why growing numbers of Labour voters and Labour heavyweights like Bob Thomson, Carol Fox, Alex Mosson, Eleanor McLaughlin and Bob Holman are backing a Yes vote to create a fairer and more prosperous Scotland where we’ll bin the Bedroom Tax, banish Trident nuclear weapons and ensure that Scotland no longer gets Tory governments we don’t vote for.”
