THREE local schools were open during the October break - but only to offer kids a free school lunch.

Hundreds of kids were back at school after the success of the events during previous breaks, North Ayrshire Council again opened the school gates.

And 549 meals were served up by their award-winning catering team as the sessions proved as popular as ever.

Kids took part in a series of organised activities before tucking into a wide-range of food, which comprised of four courses each day, from Monday to Friday.

It cost just £1.90 for the day, with activities free, and children entitled to a free school lunch were again entitled to eat free of charge.

Loudoun Montgomery, St John’s Primary and St Bridget’s Primary were all open to make it a holiday to remember for the youngsters.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, Councillor Tony Gurney said: After the success of this scheme during previous holidays it was no surprise that so many took part during the October break. This scheme gives kids a chance to get involved in physical activities with their friends throughout the holiday as well as the opportunity to get a good, healthy and nutritious meal.

‘‘North Ayrshire school pupils have always enjoyed a high standard of nutritious meals and looking at the varied menu over the five days it is clear to see why we are considered one of the best.’ In total 549 meals were served over the five days across the schools and other establishments. Loudoun Montgomery was open to Glebe Primary pupils and Loudoun Montgomery pupils while St John’s catered for their own kids along with Hayocks Primary. St Bridget’s hosted their own pupils as well those from Moorpark and Glengarnock Primaries.
