Troon based artist, Jody Kelly entertained the assembled members and guests of the New Cunninghame Art Club last Thursday evening.

Jody’s artwork is drawn from a fascinating and unique view of the everyday world around us.

He has a very interesting approach to art. A fact that he shared with the guests before commencing with the demonstration.

“I am a Google image magpie,” he said, as he explained how he came up with his ideas for the surrealist paintings that he brought along for the guests to view.

“I want the public to see the paintings almost as a collage, because that is the way I work.

"I take images from various places and add them together.” His demonstration piece for the evening was more straightforward.

A closely cropped portrait of his actor friend, Ronnie Bridges.

The initial sketch had been pre-drawn on the canvas beforehand.

Jody worked in acrylic with just three primary colours.

The reference photograph that he used for the demonstration was taken from an image on his mobile phone.

He worked with one brush only, using bold linear marks that quickly established the darker tones of the subject’s features.

Over these, he qualified the shape and tone of the initial brush strokes, keeping the lighter tones until nearer the end.

The painting gradually began to take shape.

Many questions were asked about his technique, and Jody was only to happy to answer.

Jody has exhibited in Ayrshire, Glasgow and Liverpool.

The Cunninghame Art club meets every second Thursday at the Argyle Community Centre, Campbell Avenue, Saltcoats.

Demonstrations start at 7.30pm and guests are most welcome.

The next demonstrating artist will be Chick McGeehan, who will be working in charcoal and pastels.

The date for your diary is October 30.

A preview on Chick will appear here next week.
