FIRE crews from Beith, Kilbirnie and Yorkhill Community Fire Stations raced to reports of fire in a shed housing livestock at Broadstone Farm Gateside near Beith.

When the first teams arrived, just before 7am last Wednesday, they attacked the fire with a high pressure hose reel jet as in excess of 40 young calves were evacuated from the shed.

Station Manager Derek Davidson said “The personnel attending attacked the blaze with two high pressure hose reels aiming for a quick knockdown of the flames and achieved the desired result fairly quickly.

"Unfortunately as a result of the incident three young calves could not be saved from the fire and succumbed to smoke.” He added “The incident commander noted the possibility of several seats of fire within the building and as such this has become a Police Scotland matter and they are now carrying out investigations in relation to wilful fire raising.” The fire service are urging land owners in rural areas to remain vigilant.
