AN ARDROSSAN man will find out his fate next month after he admitted stealing £150 from his ex-girlfriend to buy cigarettes and gamble.

Hugh Vernon McNeil, 22, of the town’s McKellar Avenue, was asked by his then-partner if he had seen her bank card after she checked it on November 29.

The Bank of Scotland were contacted and she requested a replacement card.

The victim was sent out two letters, one with her new card and another saying that her account was overdrawn.

The bank was contacted again and it was discovered that a possible fraud had been carried out at two local bookmakers and a garage.

She suspected McNeil but when questioned, he denied it.

McNeil later texted her and owned up, insisting he would pay her back.

Police were called and he admitted the theft.

Sheriff McDonald told him: “This is a breach of trust and you have another matter on your record for this.” Sentence was adjourned for reports until February 3.
