TWITTER reacted with its usual guile and tongue-in-cheek nature after Brian Donohoe’s comments in the House of Commons in regards to Trident and Russian submarines.

And there was even a hashtag used by opponents of nuclear weapons and the Labour Party which was intended to ridicule the Central Ayrshire MP.

#PlacesRussianShipsSeen was started on Wednesday afternoon and picked up pace with people trying to outwit their counterparts.

Tweets included one from Andrew Jackson who said: “#PlacesRussianShipSeen Sandwich shop in Ayr started selling Russian subs. 6-inch or footlong available. Has Donohoe got his wires crossed?” Natalie McGarry who is a convenor for the SNP in Glasgow got in on the act and tweet: “#PlacesRussianShipsSeen I saw a Russian ship in Glasgow Fort. It was disguised as a kids pirate ship, but Brian Donohoe corrected me.” This hashtag came as the MP’s apparent official account for his 2015 election campaign became more active but embarrassingly the biography on the account spells Mr Donohoe’s name incorrectly and the username isn’t Brian’s but that of Phillip Saxton his campaign manager and Labour Councillor for Troon which can be found at @PSaxton1958.

Brian Donohoe said: “They are mainly from mad NATS and it’s like water off a ducks back.

“On a serious note I hold extremely high the defence of our country and believe anyone who wants to have us go bare into the negotiating chamber plainly wrong. I’m a firm believer in multi-lateral disarmament and believe that is the only way to protect the children and grandchildren of the UK.
