Central Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe has said he is ‘delighted’ to discover that Glasgow Prestwick Airport is continuing to be considered as the site of the UK’s first spaceport after the Westminster consultation came to its conclusions this week.

The MP said: “This is brilliant news and a step in the right direction of success for the future of the Airport.” During the consultations the eight previously shortlisted sites were considered and the list has now been shortened to six with the Government deciding to disregard RAF Lossiemouth and Kinloss Barracks.

The six aerodromes that the Government agrees should remain potentially feasible locations are Campbeltown Airport, Glasgow Prestwick Airport, Llanbedr Airfield, Newquay Cornwall Airport, RAF Leuchars and Stornoway Airport.

Brian Donohoe added: “In Prestwick we already have a number of big names which are connected to the aerospace industry such as BAE, Spirit and UTC coupled with its best asset as the UKs most fog-free airport I would call it a definite contender as the UKs first spaceport.”
