UNIVERSAL Credit is to be launched across North Ayrshire from next week.

It is a new benefit administered by the Department for Work and Pensions which will replace six existing benefits with a monthly payment.

It is set to be introduced in North Ayrshire on April 27 for single people of working age who make a new claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance.  This will gradually be extended to couples and families in North Ayrshire in the months to come.

To apply for Universal Credit, residents must complete an online application form.

This is available at www.gov.uk/apply-universal-credit.

Residents who don’t have a computer can complete Universal Credit applications forms free of charge at various locations throughout the area.

Help will also be available to those who need support to complete the form.

Council tenants should seek advice from the Welfare Reform Advice Team on 0300 999 4606 during office hours while housing association tenants should contact their landlord.

Private tenants and owner occupiers can call the Universal Credit helpline on 0345 600 0723 or contact Community Housing Advocacy Project (CHAP) on 01294 475633, Community Led Action Support Project (CLASP) on 01294 602711, or the North Ayrshire Citizens Advice Service (NACAS) on 01475 673586.
