A BUST-UP at a hotel following a family wedding led to a ‘morning after’ drink driving conviction for a nurse.

Helen McDonald, 48, pled guilty to the charge at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week.

The court heard that police stopped McDonald’s car around 10am on the morning of June 29 after they were concerned about the manner of her driving.

Appearing to smell of alcohol, officers carried out a roadside breath test on McDonald which was found to be 59mg of alcohol in 100ml when the legal limit is 22mg.

McDonald’s solicitor said his client, from Cruachan Avenue, Renfrew, had been driving since 1990 and this was her first offence.

He added: “She had attended her niece’s wedding at a hotel in Kilwinning where she and her partner had booked a room.

“They had gone to the room where they had an argument.

"She phoned a taxi which didn’t arrive so decided to sleep in her car.

“When she awoke, she made an error of judgment thinking she was sober enough to drive home and stupidly drove the car.

“She is employed as a primary care nurse visiting various health clinics in Renfrewshire.

“She has advised her employer of the offence and may face disciplinary action.

"They have said they may find another form of employment for her but this is not guaranteed.

"She is extremely remorseful.

"She has had a driving licence since 1990 and has never been in any bother whatsoever.

“I hope you can deal with this matter as leniently as possible.” Sentencing McDonald to a 16 month disqualification and a £340 fine, Sheriff Rafferty said: “This is an extremely serious and unfortunate matter.”
