A MULTI-MILLION pound project to develop a new sheltered housing complex in Saltcoats is set to get underway this month.

The £6.4million works will see the current Canal Court sheltered housing, along with the David White Centre, being demolished.

They will make way for a new state-of-the-art complex which is expected to become the flagship for housing of its type in North Ayrshire.

The project is part of the council’s Sheltered Housing Re-provisioning Programme which aims to provide high quality accommodation for older people.

Cabinet Member for Place, Councillor Jim Montgomerie, said: “We are fully committed to supporting the most vulnerable in our communities.
“This project underlines our continued effort to ensuring our residents can live in an environment tailored to their needs.

“The construction of this state-of-the-art, purpose-built facility will also be extremely valuable in planning similar projects in the future.

“We look forward to seeing how these works progress over the coming months.”

Demolition work is scheduled to begin this month and will last approximately six weeks.

A traffic management plan will be put in place to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists during this phase of the works.

Once the demolition is complete, work to build the brand new complex will then begin.

This is expected to commence in Spring 2017 and be completed by summer 2018.

The newly improved facility will provide essential new housing, designed specifically for the elderly and those with varying needs.

It will comprise of 36 homes – a mixture of one and two bedroom properties.

There will also be a range of features including a communal lounge/dining area, landscaped courtyard and private balconies for residents.
