A BUSY bypass between Saltcoats and Stevenston is to be closed this weekend for resurfacing works.

Scotland TranServ on behalf of Transport Scotland will resurface the southbound carriageway of the A78 between the Sharphill and Pennyburn Roundabouts.

Weather permitting, the programme of works, which was postponed late last year, will re-commence this Friday (January 13).

To protect the safety of workers and road users, a total closure of the A78 southbound between the Sharphill and Pennyburn Roundabouts will be in place continuously from 8pm on Friday until 6am on Monday, January 16.

The northbound carriageway will remain open throughout the works.

A local diversion route will be in place via Eglington Road (A738) and High Road (A738). This route is suitable for all vehicles except abnormal loads.

Andy Fraser, operating company representative for Scotland TranServ said: “This essential maintenance scheme will be carried out to improve the road surface on this section of the A78.

“We understand the importance of this route as a vital link between Ayrshire and Inverclyde and are committed to maintaining this route to support neighbouring communities and the local economy for years to come.”
