A CAMPAIGN has been launched to reduce the amount of litter being dropped outside schools across North Ayrshire.
The initiative – known as OB-LITTER-ATE – is being trialled for six weeks around Auchenharvie Academy in Stevenston.
The council’s Environmental Enforcement Team will patrol the surrounding areas to identify littering offenders. If successful, the campaign will then launch in Irvine and Kilwinning.
Pupils have been advised that should they be caught dropping litter they face letters being sent home to parents and detention at school
Parents will be notified that there is a possibility of a fixed penalty unless the student volunteers for a litter pick with the school eco group.
Offenders may also be served with a fixed penalty for repeat offences
Councillor Jim Montgomerie, Cabinet Member for Place, said: “This is a fantastic initiative which we’re confident will have the desired results.
“We want to change the culture and we’re confident this will help us achieve that.”
