CHILDREN at James Reid School in Saltcoats are enjoying their new Sensory Room.

The interactive therapy area is designed to develop the pupils’ communication skills through special lighting, music, and objects.

Despite only opening a couple of weeks ago, the kids are already reaping the benefits from the room.

Heather Speirs, class teacher and sensory coordinator for the room, said: “It’s completely changed that environment for them.

“We’ve seen a real change in them, especially in a lot of the harder to reach kids with severe sensory problems. This is perfect for them.

“It’s absolutely amazing the difference you see in the kids already. They’re really enjoying it.

“It’s actually becoming a place where even people without sensory problems are wanting to use it – the staff all want to try it out!

“The bubble tube is really relaxing. The bubbles go up and down and it changes colour.

“There’s buttons the kids can press and the whole room changes colour, which helps them to learn about cause and effect.

“They learn to connect that if they touch something, it changes colour and that also helps with their coordination skills.

“We’re also waiting for an aromatherapy diffuser, which will make the room smell really nice.

“It’s absolutely amazing because we’ve been trying to get this up and running for years.”
