ARTY kids at a Three Towns primary school have pulled out their paint pots and brushed aside a rival bid for the local ferry service by creating colourful poster designs for the Save Our Ferry campaign.

Primary 5, 6 and 7 classes at Mayfield Primary School in Saltcoats went overboard with creative ideas to show their support for keeping the Arran and Kintyre ferry services in Ardrossan.

As the Herald has reported previously, Ardrossan is campaigning to retain the 180-year-old Arran ferry route following an attempt by Associated British Ports (ABP) to snatch the service and relocate it to Troon.

Slogans on the pupils’ eye-catching artwork show how well they have researched the case for ‘keeping it A to B’.

‘Save money, save time, save our ferry’ is a recurring theme, echoing the ‘shorter, faster, cheaper’ case for retaining Ardrossan.

Mayfield Primary’s headteacher Mrs Stewart says the art project was also a great learning exercise that touched on a variety of different topics.

She said: “The children discussed all the pros and cons of the rival bids, researching the issue using the local and national press, campaign materials and social media.

“We looked at the impact on the local economy, local businesses and transport.

“The P7 class had visited Arran Outdoor Education Centre in November so it was fresh in their memory what the impact of moving to Troon would be.

“At the end of the exercise the vote was unanimous – keep it A to B!”

The children’s artwork will be displayed in Ardrossan and Saltcoats Libraries.
