A MUM who has been locked in a dispute with her landlord because her Stevenston home is riddled with damp now fears that her family could face homelessness after he decided to sell the property.

Samantha Chapman says she has been complaining to the owner for months about mould, which she says is risking her and her young children’s health.

But the 24-year-old has now learned that her Connect Property Management landlord plans to sell the house and Samantha is at a loss over what to do.

She said: “My children’s breathing’s really bad and I’ve got fluid in my chest. It’s sore and so hard to breathe. I have to take a brown inhaler.

“My wee girl ended up in hospital two days before Christmas. An infection had gone down into her chest. She’s constantly ill and off nursery.

“My kids’ bedroom is like an icicle. They’ve got water dripping and mould on their ceiling and there’s mould all over the bathroom wall.”

After months of complaining about the damp, Samantha was shocked to receive a letter from Connect Property Management informing her that her landlord is selling the house and her family have two months to leave.

She said: “It’s just more stress.”

The Herald contacted Connect Property Management in Glasgow but they declined to comment.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We have a private sector team who offer advice to tenants in respect of private lets and work with landlords to ensure that private rented housing is brought up to a tolerable standard. The team have been working with Mrs Chapman over the past few weeks in respect of her current concerns.

“We would like to reassure any person who is homeless or threatened with homelessness that they will be supported by the council to make a homeless presentation and, if required, will be provided with temporary accommodation until alternative housing can be found.

“We would also like to remind people that anyone aged 16 years or over has the right to join a housing register.

“The North Ayrshire Housing Register is a shared housing register for people who are looking for social housing in North Ayrshire and is operated by North Ayrshire Council, Cunninghame Housing Association, Irvine Housing Association and ANCHO.”

Anyone wishing to join the register can request an application pack from one of the housing offices or visit the council’s website.
