DISRUPTION on a busy Stevenston road is expected for the next few weeks as major improvement works get underway on the A738 Hawkhill Roundabout.

The works, which will see the road widened, reduce congestion and increase the reliability of a key bus route, will begin on Monday, February 20 and last around three weeks.

Safe working zones and traffic management arrangements are being put in place and will be carried out in two phases:

• Phase 1 will last two weeks and will restrict vehicle access to the residential area and retail park. Traffic leaving the retail park will only be able to turn left so to return to Stevenston they will need to use the Pennyburn Roundabout.

• Phase 2 will last a week. This will involve four-way traffic lights.

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “These are essential works that will make a huge difference for motorists and all those using the bus services. We have tried to schedule the works to minimise disruption as much as possible. We will maintain access to premises, but due to the nature of the works there may be occasions when there will be some inconvenience.

“The public’s full co-operation with the contractors would be much appreciated.”

The plans may include Sunday working.
