AROUND 15 people are taking part in a 10-mile sponsored walk in support of 18-year-old Ainslie Mitchell, who needs to raise £20,000 for life-saving treatment abroad.

As the Herald has reported previously, Ainslie is fighting incurable cancer. But the former Auchenharvie Academy pupil has been given hope with news of a potentially life-saving vaccine available in Cuba.

Ainslie’s loved ones are now frantically trying to raise the £20,000 needed for the treatment to give the teen the best chance possible of survival.

Catherine Edgar, who is the mother of Ainslie’s partner Kieran Dickson, is organising a sponsored walk on Sunday, July 23.

Catherine, from Stevenston, told the Herald: “I just wanted to do something.

“Ainslie’s just had chemo. She feels a but under the weather but she’s doing ok at the moment. It’s a shame for her. Some days she’s better than others.

“We’re all here for her. She’s got Kieran, she’s got her mammy, she’s got all of us.

“My sister’s had cancer – she had breast cancer – but she’s fine now, so I know what it’s like, what they’re all going through. It’s just heartbreaking.”

The walking team will set off at 11am from Morrisons in Stevenston, where Catherine works, and head to the Rowan Tree. They will then walk back to the supermarket again.

Morrisons has offered to donate water and snacks for the group.

Catherine added: “We’re gong to get t-shirts made up for it.

“I thought Morrisons would be a good place to start because there’s toilets there and it’s a long walk!”
